We continue to see the uptick of independent film production in the Catskills and the latest of those films garnering attention is The Miseducation of Cameron Post directed by Desiree Akhavan and based on the 2012 debut novel of the same name by Emily M. Danforth. The film set in the early 1990’s centers around high-school track athlete Cameron (Chloe Grace Moretz) being sent to a Christian institution devoted to “curing” her of same-sex attraction. Production took place in November and December of 2016 at a number of locations around the Northern Catskills including Saugerties, the Coxsackie High School and Riedlbauer’s Resort in Round Top, which served as both the location for gay conversion center and the home for the cast and crew throughout filming.
The film has been resonating with festival audiences. In January, the film took home the U.S. Grand Jury Prize for Drama at the Sundance Film Festival and next week it will take part in the Tribeca Film Festival. A list of those screenings can be found here.
