MALCOLM SCREENING

If you are one of the handful of subscribers to this blog my apologies for both the long delay and for this ‘tester-teaser’ piece. I am thinking about re-booting ‘Cinema with a Twist’ in the 2023-2024 off-season of Greenville’s Drive-in 32 and wanted to see if it still worked.

The movie still pictured is from the Aussie classic MALCOLM, released in 1986 and, thanks to Umbrella Entertainment, it will be screened tonight for free at the drive-in. It was a solid domestic hit in Australia but never ‘jumped the pond’ to the U.S. and beyond. It’s star Colin Friels has since enjoyed a robust career, most notably in Sam Raimi’s DARKMAN in 1990. MALCOLM is one of those great, quirky comedies that Australia is so fond of producing with an ersatz ‘Odd Throuple’ at its core, utilizing the talents of the creative but socially-detached Malcolm played by Friels. I have described it previously as if ‘The Station Agent‘ was a heist film. (I adore ‘The Station Agent’. It remains one of the greatest independent films ever made.)

If you actually see this post today and live in the neighborhood, please come by and check it out. The cocktail pairing is Kate’s Cherry Ripe, a confectionary cocktail based on the Aussie candy bar of the same name.
